چکیده

Material and methods A 3-hour EHC was performed in 13 Warmblood horses (11 mares, 2 geldings). All horses were clinically healthy but had variable degrees of insulin sensitivity, were some horses were defined as insulin resistant. Blood samples for analysis of plasma glucose and insulin were collected before the start of the EHC, every 10-min during the EHC and immediately after the EHC. Mean, systolic and diastolic blood pressure was measured before and after the EHC using an indirect oscillometric device. Insulin and glucose data from the EHC were used to calculate the mean rate of glucose disposal per unit of insulin during steady state (M/Iindex).

Blood pressure in Warmblood horses before and during a euglycemic-hyperinsulinemic clamp

BACKGROUND Insulin resistance (IR) in humans is related to hypertension and impaired vasodilation. Insulin administration has been shown to lower blood pressure both in insulin resistant as well as in insulin sensitive individuals. The aim of the study was to investigate the association between insulin sensitivity and alterations in blood pressure in healthy horses before and after a euglycemic...

Comparison between the euglycemic-hyperinsulinemic clamp and the use of proxies for determination of insulin sensitivity in horses

Background Accurate quantification of insulin resistance is important for diagnosing and determining the efficacy of treatment in patients with equine metabolic syndrome (EMS). The euglycemic-hyperinsulinemic clamp (EHC) is a goldstandard method for measuring insulin sensitivity (IS) but the complexity of the technique limits its use in research. The use of proxies based on fasting values offer...

Relationship Between β‐cell Response and Insulin Sensitivity in Horses based on the Oral Sugar Test and the Euglycemic Hyperinsulinemic Clamp

BACKGROUND A hyperbolic relationship between β-cell response and insulin sensitivity (IS) has been described in several species including rodents, dogs, and humans. This relationship has not been elucidated in the horse. HYPOTHESIS/OBJECTIVES To determine whether the hyperbolic relationship between β-cell response and IS exists in horses by using indices of β-cell response from the oral sugar...

The Effects of a Hyperinsulinemic-Euglycemic Clamp on Milk Fat Synthesis and the Expression of Fat Synthesis-Related Genes in the Mammary Gland Tissues of Lactating Goats

To determine whether insulin exerts an effect on milk fat yield through the direct regulation of milk fat synthesis in the mammary gland, the hyperinsulinemic-euglycemic clamp procedure was performed in lactating goats in the present study. The effects of the hyperinsulinemic-euglycemic clamp on milk yield, milk composition, milk fatty acid yield and the expression levels of mRNAs of milk fat s...

Human Brain Glycogen Metabolism During and After Hypoglycemia

OBJECTIVE We tested the hypotheses that human brain glycogen is mobilized during hypoglycemia and its content increases above normal levels ("supercompensates") after hypoglycemia. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS We utilized in vivo (13)C nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy in conjunction with intravenous infusions of [(13)C]glucose in healthy volunteers to measure brain glycogen metabolism d...
